History
Monastir Habib Bourguiba International Airport, located in the southern west of Monastir city one of the best touristic destinations in Tunisia, started its operations in1968 under the Office of Civil Aviation and Airports (OACA). In January 2007, TAV airports submitted its offer to the Tunisian Ministry of Transport and In May 2007 TAV airports announced as the winner bidder. The concession agreement was signed between TAV airports and the Tunisian authorities stating to take over the operation of Monastir airport in 2008 to hold the right to operate it until May 2047.
The passenger capacity of Monastir Airport is around 3. 5 million per year. In 2019 (year of reference and pre- covid-19) Monastir airport recorded 1.586 million passengers. In 2021 (post Covid), the airport recorded 0.42 million and shows a good return In 2022 and 2023 recording 1.01 million and 1.5 million passengers, respectively.
After adhering to Airport Council International (ACI) Africa in 2012, expertise and know how at the African Continent level paved the way for Monastir airport towards better achievements in terms of efficiency in operations with respect to international measures of environment protection. Monastir airport received level (1) “Mapping” of carbon accreditation and further assured its position as a leading environment-friendly airport at local and continental levels by earning level (2) “Reduction” in 2022.
